Our Reactive Dog Program has been designed to progressively train you and your dog the necessary skills to cope with a variety of distractions whether they be exciting or worrying in the dogs mind.
The focus for this program is on dog to dog aggression, although it is also applicable to other distractions/worries too (like people). It enables you to learn how to move forward in your dog's journey of recovery. We use a system of various positive loose leash handling techniques combined with a process of desensitisation and counter conditioning to triggers and stimuli. Each week we move you to the next stage if you have practised your homework and we can see that you are both ready. Essentially the more you put in the more you will get out of the program and the better the results. What do we do differently and why?
A program specifically designed with safety in mind, in a private outdoor set up that inspires confidence in you and your dog, with the sole instruction of an experienced behaviourist and dog trainer who specialises in reactive dogs. She has selected and trained her own team of dogs to help mentor yours as you progress. What topics do we cover?
Understanding reactivity Understanding how to motivate your dog How dogs learn Canine body language Leash handling techniques Management strategies Creating an emergency exit How to deal with triggers Creating a positive response and progressively building focus around triggers What will you need? Treat training pouch Secure collar (a buckle or collar with a locking button is safest) or a secure harness and a lead no shorter than 1.8m long. A large quantity of training food (a mix of their kibble and a variety of tasty treats is best) A long line (10m preferable) Poo bags Good solid outdoor footwear - no jandals Warm clothing and waterproof jacket Dogs are required to be secured in your vehicle in either a covered crate or tethered so they are not loose with limited visuals. No dogs is to come out of the car without having a lead attached first. |
